Bibliography on Oriental Rugs and Textiles

Artikel vom 7. April 2017 zuletzt aktualisiert am 31. Mai 2017

A.C.Creswells „A Bibliography of the Architecture, Arts and Crafts of Islam“ vergleichbar.

Gabbeh Baktiar, Privatsammlung

Dear reader,
this is a non-scholarly and inevitably uncomplete bibliography of oriental carpet and oriental
textile publications with hundreds of omissions and inaccuracies/faults.
Its main purpose is to serve as a guide for the oriental rug and textile (book) collector for
orientation in the vast field of publications from the late 19th century to recent days (2016).
My Motivation
As a private collector of oriental rug and textile books (“everything in any language”) I‘m
always keen on getting information on existing and new publications.
Unfortunately, all existing bibliographies – which cover the whole field – are (except for
Siegelaub, 1997) at least 25 years old and more recent publications are unavoidably
missing. In addition, they do not include a systematic listing of articles.
So I started to collect information, to copy articles and to make notes from the early 2000s,
always having in mind to write an oriental rug bibliography, which I eventually started on
January 1st, 2013.
In my eyes an up-to-date bibliography is quite useful, especially in the internet era: One the
one side, the number and variety of available books has largely increased in our times (and
prices of most books have dropped). On the other side it is – except for the few remaining
specialized book dealers – often quite difficult to get an appropriate impression of the
contents/qualities of a book (the majority of internet book dealers bother with their
‘satisfaction guarantee’, but write nothing substantial about the book itself).
Hence, I decided to compile this oriental rug and textile bibliography and to publish it as a
pdf-file (which appears as the most appropriate way of distribution to me). I hope that it will
be useful for a large number of people interested in this area.
I wish you a lot of pleasure (and a large amount of new information) while reading (single
chapters of) my compilation (and: excuse my faulty English),
Stefan Schekira

Personal Comments

Strengths / Weaknesses of this bibliography

Due to my focus of interest, the chapters on oriental rugs are described and rated on a

higher base of knowledge/experience than the chapters on textiles and Islamic art.
Consequently, I dared to judge the quality of carpets in many publications (of course always
a subjective and tricky undertaking), as many readers will expect exactly this kind of
information. Vice versa, the quality of textiles is rated only in a few publications.
In total, the bibliography covers a higher percentage of carpet than of textile publications
and a higher percentage of existing German publications compared to foreign ones.

As a rug book collector, I have included much “non-scientific” information, which may be

especially interesting for rug / other rug book collectors: (formal) distinctions between
different editions, number of replaced color and black/white plates in later editions, pictorial
material or text (passages) drawn from other publications etc.

With some more months of input/work, the quality of the bibliography would have increased:

more entries in better quality, less faults, more references/related articles etc. But after more
than 4 years of quite continuous work (besides my job), I decided to publish this first version
as an acceptable and substantial basis for later improvement.

Working with this bibliography

In addition to the categorisation of topics according to the table of contents – which is

hopefully suitable for most readers – I tried to support “Searching” within this bibliography by
standardising information like writing the names of authors (always in the following order:
second name, first names) or magazines (magazine volume/issue), wherever this was
possible: So you can evaluate the (main) contents of a specific issue of Oriental Rug
Review by entering “Oriental Rug Review 12/5” (reviews by “ORR 12/5”).
The entries for “Hali”, “Ghereh” and “Heimtex” are standardised in the same way.
Also many proper names are standardised like name of places and tribes (see appendix).
NOTE. For a comfortable use of ‘Search’-functions you may use an Adobe Acrobat Reader©
or similar programs (usually available for free download).

Perspectives for this bibliography

Hopefully there will be a lot of reactions (criticism, additions, corrections, praises etc.) to this

compilation. Every kind of feedback (or contact with other rug book collectors) is highly
appreciated. It is planned to publish a new edition 2.0, when there will be enough new
material. Hence, your feedback will be a valuable contribution for the next edition(s).
